Aoudad Hunting F.A.Q.
How much does the hunt cost?
We have different offerings depending on the year. Please see the “Our Hunts” page for complete details.
What is a guided hunt?
During your hunt you will be accompanied at all times by a guide who spends every day tracking these animals up and down the mountains here. He’ll work on getting you into the sheep and will assist in anyway he can on getting your sheep back down the mountain.
Do you offer self-guided hunts?
We do not offer self-guided hunts at this time but you are free to ask your guide to be less involved if you’d like.
Where are you located?
We are in far Southwest Texas on the border of Mexico just outside of Big Bend National Park. If you google Terlingua, TX or 79852, you’ll pretty much be in the heart of our hunting grounds.
What is a free-range hunt?
Free-range means pursuing wild animals in their natural habitat with no fencing or pens to restrict their movement.
What is the weather like?
It is important that you prepare for extremes. Expect 4 seasons, every day. Think LAYERS!
Temperature – from freezing temps in the winter to scorching in the summer, you’ll want to be sure you prepare for it all.
What are my payment options?
We require a 50% deposit by way of check or money order to book a hunt, and the remaining balance is due 30 days prior to your scheduled hunt date.
Do you charge for a non-hunter to tag along?
Extra non hunters are $100/day on the mountain.
Do you hunt on public or private land?
There is really no public land to speak of in the state of Texas. All of our aoudad hunting is done on private land that we either own or lease.
Do you offer archery hunts?
Free-range Barbary sheep (aoudad) are very hard to hunt with a bow. We’re willing to let you try, but we cannot guarantee a good time. We’re working on some things for the future that will make this an easier hunt, but right now we recommend bringing a rifle for when frustration sets in.
Can you accommodate disabled hunters?
We are working on some things that will allow us to accommodate disabled hunters in the future, but at this time we are unable to take hunters with physical disabilities as the hunting terrain simple doesn’t allow for it.
Where is the nearest airport?
Small airports are available for private planes, otherwise the closest commercial airport would be Midland/Odessa (MAF) about 3.5 hours from us. Most of our clients drive in and then ride with us to hunt. We’ll give you detailed directions once you book with us.
What is the average shot distance on Aoudad?
We’ve taken them at 50 yards and out over 1000 yards. On average, our goal is to put a good stalk on them and get in for a comfortable 200-400 yard shot.
When is the best time to hunt aoudad?
We hunt these sheep literally all year long. There really is no time that’s better than another but our summers can be brutal with temps reaching 115 degrees in the mountains. While we prefer the cooler months, we have guests out throughout the year to hunt.
What's the season on aoudad?
There is no season on barbary sheep (aoudad). They are considered an exotic in the state of Texas and can be taken at any time.
Do you provide a firearm for my hunt?
We do not provide a firearm for your hunt, but we do have rentals available if you let us know in advance.
What equipment do I need to bring for my hunt?
Please see our Aoudad Hunt Checklist page for complete details.
How many other hunters will be in camp during my hunt?
Your hunt is your hunt and there will be no one else except for the guide with you while hunting. We also don’t have a base camp right now but if you choose to camp with us, you’ll be given a private camp location.
If I leave my trophy with you, can you take it to a taxidermist for me?
We use one studio and would be happy to deliver your trophy to them at no cost. See our Aoudad Taxidermy page for details.
May I take additional animals during my hunt?
You’re free to harvest javelina and any predators seen during your hunt. To harvest additional aoudad, please talk to your guide.
Am I guaranteed to take an animal during the hunt?
Our aoudad hunts are 100% free-range and fair-chase. There are no fences or pens here. It’s a difficult hunt in very difficult terrain. With that being said, we have very high success rates and will do everything within our power to get you your trophy.
Can I get a refund on my deposit?
All deposits are non-refundable but you are free to transfer them to another hunter at any time if you are unable to make the trip.
Can you provide me with references from past aoudad hunters?
Absolutely! Please contact us.
What caliber rifle do I need and how should I have it sighted in?
We recommend any good, flat shooting caliber that you are comfortable shooting. Something 30 caliber or better is preferred and we recommend having your rifle sighted in and shooting 2″ high at 100 yards which should put you dead on at the distances we’re typically shooting at.
How far in advance do I need to book my hunt?
We book our aoudad hunts on a first come, first serve basis. To secure your preferred dates, you need to have completed all paperwork and sent in your deposit. We will hold dates no longer than 15 days without a deposit.
How much acreage do your have to hunt on?
We have around 12,000 acres of prime, mountain-top sheep country. We could brag about the size of the ranches we hunt like some do, but it’s only the mountains that matter so that’s what we talk about.
Do I need a hunting license and do you provide them?
All hunters will need a Texas hunting license. Out of state hunters are best suited to buy the type 157 tag for $48 which covers exotics and is good for 5 days. Please see our Aoudad Hunting Laws & Regulations page for details.
What does "no-frills" mean?

Do you provide discounts for veterans or active military?
We offer a 10% discount for all veterans and active military. Thank you for your service.
Your lower price hunts allows someone (like myself) who couldn’t afford a $5000 hunt to be able to go on a hunt of a lifetime. I can say this because hunting with Chris back in August was one of the best hunts of my life! Car-camping by myself for almost a week was just part of the adventure. You may not be guaranteed a gold medal ram or have a 5 star lodge with this hunt, but it’s a hunt you will never forget. Work your ass off and you could get the chance at a stud of a ram. , thanks to having an experienced guide like Chris that will literally do everything they can to get you a sheep is worth every penny! I was fortunate enough to get an awesome ram when I was there in August, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat!C. Sanford
